My recent walks have been pure entertainment. I’ve never seen so much enthusiasm for Halloween as this year. It must have all to do with Covid-19 suppressing pent up creative juices all these months. So many homes have cool, spooky, and unexpected themes going on – from the board and care home to the first aid and emergency supply shop.

Scarecrows are coming out of the woodwork, too, for this year’s community Scarecrow contest. Residents and merchants are outdoing previous years with scarecrows representing all walks of life, so to speak. I am already seeing top contenders with more to come.

One day, Lola joined me on a scarecrow-hunting drive around town. Then, on a quiet road, I saw a trio of deer grazing in a small patch of open land. I made a quiet U-turn to enjoy a closer look. The deer were completely oblivious to my car. I worried, though, that once Lola spotted them (they were on her side of the car), she would scratch and claw at the window simultaneously growling and showing her canines. But Lola’s a Golden Retriever, a most docile and fun-loving breed.

She didn’t even notice the deer camouflaged in the wilderness.
